Axes Systems Celebrates 20th Anniversary with Highlights of Successes

Axes Systems, the leading innovator in the mapping world is celebrating its 20th anniversary and looks back on a long list of technical advances and achievements. Axes Systems and it’s core product “axpand” has seen widespread media and market attention including recognition as a top 20 “on demand” solution in German-speaking region. In 2009, Axes Systems was recognized as a Red Herring Global 100 technology company and a potential top 500 company listing in Switzerland.

The most critical and time-consuming step in the map-making process is generalization – the step during which location-based data is simplified to make maps readable. Because generalization is extremely complex, it has long been considered a step that could not be automated. Axes Systems technological advancements include, among many others, implementing a system that provides the highest level of automation available for the map making process, which includes generalization, labelling and incremental updating of geographic data in multiple scales. The time and cost saving potential for both private and public map data providers is enormous.

Axes Systems' core product axpand not only provides automatic generalization, but automates most of the critical steps necessary to create high-quality map products. The software is now available as a traditional in-house installation and also as a state-of-the-art SaaS (Software as a Service) application. With axpand, it is possible to fully migrate data and styles from traditional graphic design tools to a geographic data base and seamlessly output map products in many different formats including formats for print, internet and mobile products. axpand’s Web technology enables user interaction from anywhere over the Internet which opens up a whole new avenue of collaboration distribution and 'crowd-sourcing'.

At this year's Intergeo trade show in Cologne (5th to 7th of October, hall 11.2, booth 2F.113) Axes Systems will present some of its newest and most advanced map-making technology.

Using the custom 'DTK' Process (Digital topographic maps), German State Surveys reduce the time necessary to finish a topographic map series by up to 80% without compromising on quality and consistence of the product. axpand DTK Process guarantees a return on investment already after the completion of the first series of topographic maps. This is an unprecedented claim in the state survey map-making industry.

Cities also benefit from packaged processes in axpand. They can use the newly available German NAS/AAA data to generate city maps at the appropriate scale quickly and efficiently. Here, too, a quick return on investment is guaranteed.

Private map publishers have been especially challenged in the last few years. Axes Systems has developed a state-of-the-art system that allows private publishers to use data in various formats to move towards efficient data-base based cartography. It is now possible to migrate Freehand and Open Street Maps data as well as use Shape files and use the data immediately to produce customized maps of varying scales using the same data. This is unprecedented in the map-making industry. axpand cuts the number of process steps required for production and saves significant amounts of time and money. In addition to integrating pre-press production within axpand, Axes Systems' innovative internet and mobile technology opens up new distribution channels that allow publishers to provide their customers with new and exciting product development opportunities.
