Because map production was originally a pen-and-paper endeavor, the production process developed into a linear one - there is a beginning, a middle and an end. When GIS systems came into play, map producers were forced to go digital and automate at least parts of their processes. Unfortunately, GIS systems were not designed to create or produce maps according to the traditions of cartography.
